✨ What Made Them Famous
Owney was the scruffy dog who became the unofficial mascot of the United States Railway Mail Service during the late 19th century. After becoming a fixture at the Albany, New York, post office, Owney began following mailbags onto railway mail cars and eventually traveled across the country. Postal workers marked his journeys by attaching tags and medals to his collar, and in 1895 the famous traveling dog even embarked on a journey around the world.
